A DOWN TO EARTH NIGHT FOR STING FASTBALLERS
Tuesday’s home opener didn’t turn out quite as hoped for Seneca Sting varsity women fastballers. Sting were taught a tough on-field lesson by the depth and experience of Durham College Lords. When the dust settled, the final count in this mercy-rule shortened outing was 19-0 in favour of the visitors. Erica and Erin Dewey topped the winning attack, driving in a combined 11 scores off six hits, including three homers. Heather Scrivens managed two of four Sting singles off veteran Durham winning pitcher Kayla MacLean. Shauna Pesch and Kelly Milne got the others. |
SUCCESSFUL START TO STING FASTBALL SEASON
Rallying from behind twice in the early going, Seneca Sting women fastballers defeated defending playoff champ St. Clair Saints 11-7 Saturday (Sept 11) in Windsor. It was the 2010 OCAA season opener for both squads. Veteran infielder Heather Scrivens topped Seneca’s 12-hit attack, driving in 4 scores from a double and a pair of singles. Two hits each came off the bats of Michelle Davies, Shauna Pesch and Kelly Milne. Keri Bagley’s three singles were best for the Saints. Shantelle Wilson picked up the pitching win, working five innings in relief of starter Amanda Boismier.
SENECA SQUAD STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS
Sting women fastballers suffered twin setbacks on home ground Saturday (Sept 18) at the hands of defending OCAA playoff champion St. Clair Saints. They lost 12-5 and 8-5; the early-season record slipping to 1 and 3. The lone Sting win to date was 11-7 on the road a week ago over those same Saints.
Twice Seneca had leads only to see them dissipate in the late going. They were one out away from a 4-3 win in the opener before Saints tied it up and rolled ahead with 8 runs in the extra inning. Shauna Pesch was best at bat for the Sting with four hits on the day, a triple, double and two singles. Amanda Boismier pitched well, gathering nine strikeouts and walking only two over a complete seven innings while dropping the second game.
TEAM EFFORT PRODUCES TWO SHUTOUTS
Some extra batting and fielding practice the night before—three hours worth—paid off in a big way for Sting at Newnham Field Tuesday night (Sept 21). The home side overhauled Conestoga Condors 9-0 and 10-0 in an OCAA Women’s Fastball League doubleheader. Seneca now sits at 3 and 3 on the season.
Sting unloaded 14 hits on the night, including two home runs each off the bats of Brenna Savery and Shauna Pesch . One of Pesch’s home runs was a towering drive of nearly 300 feet that came close to clearing the distant left-centre field fence, a feat last achieved nearly a decade ago. Amanda Boismier, seven strikeouts in seven innings, and Shantelle Wilson, five Ks, bagged the pitching wins for Sting.
PROGRESS OF SORTS ON THE BALL FIELD
Saturday’s action in the 2010 Can-Am Classic invitational women’s fastball tournament in Oshawa produced mixed results for Seneca Sting. Following a 6-0 setback to Durham Lords, in which Seneca held the powerful tournament hosts to 8 hits, the Sting rallied to prevail 14-3 over Mohawk Mountaineers. In the win, Cassandra McKinlay produced four Seneca scores from a double and two singles. Kelly Milne hammered a two-run home run and added a pair of singles. Shantelle Wilson worked a complete-game seven-hitter for the pitching win. Earlier, Sting managed five hits off Durham pitching ace Kayla MacLean, who recorded a half-dozen strikeouts and walked none. Milne and Heather Scrivens both got two hits off MacLean. Seneca righthander Amanda Boismier worked the full seven innings in defeat.
SCORES FALL SHORT; LESSONS LEARNED
Favourable results weren’t there Sunday for Seneca Sting lady fastballers at the Can-Am Classic tournament in Oshawa, although the exhibition event did provide some hard lessons. Sting fell on the short side of the scores: 17-0 to Monroe Tribunes of Rochester, New York and 15-6 against OCAA rival Mohawk Mountaineers of Hamilton. Monroe went on to take the tournament title 6-3 over host Durham Lords after losing 2-0 to Durham in their Saturday round-robin match-up. For Sting, there was little to be cheerful about on Sunday. Amanda Boismier managed a pair of hits, including a double, of the five allowed by Monroe pitcher Kelly Spear. Against Mohawk, it was a match of giveaways. Sting fielders committed seven errors, making seven of the opposition runs unearned. Darkening the day even further, starting shortstop Shauna Pesch and utility infielder Taylor Ceolin were both struck down by pitched balls and are out of the lineup with leg injuries. Opening bat Brenna Savery was the lone bright spot with two singles against Mohawk and one in the Monroe game, giving her a total of five for the weekend.
Sting eek out one-run
victory in 7-6 win over Mohawk
In other Seneca Sting sports action, the Women's Fastball team squeaked out a 7-6 victory over the Mohawk Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon. Amanda Boismier earned the victory for the Sting in relief while Jessica Roloson took the loss for Mohawk. Boismier helped her own cause by driving home the winning-run for the Sting in the bottom of the sixth, breaking a 6-6 draw. Kelly Milne, Brenna Savery went deep for Seneca in the victory.
Sting get stung in doubleheader at Durham
The Seneca Sting Women’s Fastball team dropped a pair of games at Durham on Sunday losing the first game 5-2 and the second by a score of 11-1. Seneca’s Kelly Milne doubled and singled in the first of game of the series while Shantelle Wilson blasted a home run for The Sting in Game 2.
